New Brixham harbour equipment could be a life-saver

12:30pm Thursday 17th May 2012

New Brixham harbour equipment could be a life-saver A vital piece of life-saving equipment has been placed on standby at Brixham Harbour. Tor Bay Harbour Authority has bought the Automated External Defibrillator (AED), which will be located at the 24-hour security office at the fish market entrance. It will be available to deal with medical casualties where a cardiac arrest has occurred. The most common cause is abnormal rhythm of the heart known as ventricular fibrillation. This abnormal rhythm can occur when the heart muscle is damaged as a result of a heart attack or when insufficient oxygen reaches the heart. AEDs, which can be used safely and effectively without prior training, correct the heart rhythm by administering one or more electric shocks. Cllr Vic Ellery, chairman of Torbay Council's Harbour Committee, said: "The harbour authority has bought this equipment as part of our ongoing commitment to harbour users and the port community. "We discussed this proposal with harbour users, and everyone was in favour of buying and installing the defibrillator. "The equipment and training for staff has cost about £1,500 -- a small price to pay for something that could help save a life. Of course we hope that it will not have to be used, but it is reassuring to know that it will be available in the event of a medical emergency." Brixham harbour master Paul Labistour said: "The majority of our staff have had first aid training provided through St John Ambulance. We are very grateful to the organisation, which supplied the AED and additional training for its use."
