IT’S really close at the head of Division A of the Sampford and Peverell district league with Calverleigh, Elmore Club and Settler Boys all sharing top spot.

Bullocks are setting the pace in Division B while Lion Cubs top Division C.

DIVISION A, results: Elmore Club 378, Redwoods 355; Bradninch C Club 455, Settler Boys 486; Brass Monkeys, bye; Barmy Army 391, Lumberjacks 399; Globetrotters 455, Bellies 415; Queens Head 328, Calverleigh 343; Castaways 349, Globe Appley 336.

High Scores: 78 – M Perrott (Bradninch C Club, four spares); 72 – Wayne Cottrell (Settler Boys, three spares); 71 – Rich Sobey (Settler Boys) and M Collins (Bellies) both with three spares; 70 – P Grant (Lumberjacks, three spares); 69 – E Andress (Bradninch C Club, two spares); 66 – Keith Goldsworthy (Settler Boys, three spares).

Reports: Elmore Club set the standard in their game with Redwoods as they went into a 27-pin lead after two legs, and though the away team pulled back four pins, that was all they could achieve. Elmore won four of the six legs.

A good start from Bradninch C Club seemed to have given them the upper hand against Settler Boys, but not so. Though the cricketers were still 13 pins ahead after four legs, the Boys were now on song and pulled ten pins on the fifth leg and then a remarkable 34 with a last leg of five-spare 95.

A good start from Barmy Army gave them the initiative over Lumberjacks but the latter’s Paul Grant had not read the script. An excellent three-spare 70 saw him posting 15 pins more than anyone else on either side and helped his team to take the points.

Globetrotters lost the first leg against Bellies but by the end of the fourth leg they were 40 pins up and that was the difference between the teams at the end of the game.

Queens Head could not make home alley advantage count as they went down to Calverleigh, who are now joint leaders. Second onto the alley, the away team went ahead by 14 pins after two legs.

There was a good start from Castaways as they went eight pins up after two legs in their game against Globe Appley. The home team only lost one leg in the game and won nicely.

DIVISION B, results: HCC1 356, The Beare 342; Crossways 388, The Merriemeade 396; Ayshford Arms 451, All Blacks 488; Uplowman 377, Bickleigh 389; The Ponies 405, Oggies 387; Roy’s Rebels, bye; Bullocks 388, Bradninch RBL 373.

High Scores: 78 – D Greening (All Blacks, four spares); S Trevelyan (Ayshford Arms, two spares one of 24); 67 – J Locke (The Ponies, two spares); 65 – M Coombs (All Blacks, two spares).

Reports: HCC1 went up to bat first and started well enough but The Beare posted a good second leg to go five up. There was only one pin in the next two but the home side upped their game in the last two to win by 14.

Crossways kicked off well against The Merriemeade, going 27 pins up, but the away side rallied in the second half and won by eight.

Ayshford Arms posted some nice rubs throughout the game but could not contend with All Blacks as they posted two high 90 rubs to win by a comfortable 37 pins.

Uplowman started off slowly giving Bickleigh room to pull a 21 pin lead. They upped their game at the end but the away side held on easily to take the points.

The Ponies started poorly with four fives but kicked it up a gear after that and comfortably beat the Oggies by 18 pins.

Bullocks won their game against Bradninch RBL with a fifth leg 78, pulling 16 pins to win by 15.

DIVISION C, results: Tiverton Chiefs 426, Heathcoat Hulas 395; Ashill Inn 389, Booze Cruzers 375; Huntsham A 379, Halfway House 388; Catherine Wheel claimed the game from Knock Em Down; Tiverton RBL 374, The Travellers 350; The Farmers 362, HCC2 371; Rose & Crown 397, Lion Cubs 421; postponed game from 10/09/14 – Catherine Wheel 378, Halfway House 387.

Reports: Tiverton Chiefs had a comfortable 31 pin home win against Heathcoat Hulas. Chiefs won the first three legs and drew the fourth to be 22 pins up. A nine pin reverse on the fifth gave Hulas a chance, but Chiefs took the last leg by eight for the win.

Ashill Inn took their first home win of the season against Booze Cruzers. The home side found themselves five down after two legs, but were soon back in it chasing Booze Cruzers modest remaining leg scores.
