EGG-CEPTIONAL Kate Garner was Highly Commended at the Pride of Somerset Youth Awards for going the extra mile to care for animals.
Kate, 12, lives in Midsomer Norton and her mum is the Bristol re-homing co-ordinator for the Battery Hen Welfare Trust.
She nominated Kate for her tireless efforts in helping look after the spent birds.
While her friends are still asleep dreaming about a day at the park or on the Playstation, Kate’s weekend frequently starts at 5am when she tends to her own animals and helps her mum collect the birds from the battery farm.
She then helps unpack them, gives them food and water, cleans and disinfects the crates and gets them ready for rehoming. She also spots birds with injuries and treats them.
For weeks afterwards she will tend to the birds who are too sick to be rehomed straight away.
She is never too tired to help and is always 100% enthusiastic, even when helping train adult volunteers.
